Our MSci Mathematics gives you the opportunity to take your passion for Mathematics to new heights. You will begin with a broad range of subjects then, in your fourth year, take on an individual project and experience the challenge and pleasure of mathematical research.

The Mathematics MSci programme will give a sound mathematical basis in a broad range of subject areas, helping you learn to apply analytical, statistical and computational skills to formulate and tackle problems. We will support you to think logically, independently and imaginatively, equipping you to make the most of the opportunities ahead.

In your first year, we will help you to make the step up to university level study and give you a sound mathematical basis in a broad range of subject areas. Alongside core calculus and algebra, other modules develop discrete mathematics, mechanics, pure mathematics, statistics and computational mathematics.

The second year will introduce you to more advanced areas allowing you to develop particular strengths or interests. You can decide at the end of this year whether to continue onto the BSc or MSci programme. The choice of modules in the third year is very broad, ranging from the highly abstract such as topology, to the highly applicable such as financial mathematics. As an MSci student, you will take at least one module involving project work.

In the fourth year you will reach the cutting edge of mathematics, choosing modules that are related to staff research areas. The MSci project is worth one third of your final year mark. You will work independently on a major project, writing a substantial report and presenting your work to others.

  • If you are interested in Computer Science you can choose to study this subject for a year between your second and third year of your Mathematics degree and achieve a degree in Mathematics with an intercalated year in Computer Science. Students from non-computing disciplines will gain in-depth knowledge of computing and enhance their work-based skills.

Entry requirements

 

Applicants should normally have one of the following:

  • A non-law bachelor’s degree (from a UK university or recognised by the BSB if you wish to study the BPTC), or
  • A ‘stale’ law degree, where five or more years have elapsed since graduation, or
  • An academic or professional qualification at degree equivalent level

If English is not your first language, you will also need to demonstrate your English Language proficiency. For example, you should have IELTS 7.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in all components.
